John Nelson Darby was born in 1832 in Ireland. He emigrated to America in 1850 and became a Baptist minister. Darby developed a distinct biblical interpretation of the end times, which he called "dispensationalism." He also developed the concept of "pre-tribulation rapture" - the belief that Jesus would come back for his "raptured" followers before the Great Tribulation, or seven years of tribulation preceding Christ's Second Coming. Darby founded the Plymouth Brethren Church in 1857, and it soon spread throughout America. Darby's interpretation of Scripture was influential, but his teachings on eschatology were controversial
He did not oppose secular society, but he did feel that Christians should have an active role in shaping it. Among other things, he opposed the liquor industry and organized many anti-slavery societies. Darby died in 1891.
